Parenting is a science project. Do I medicate him because he has a fever or let him sweat it out? Do I let him hang out with kids that I know aren't the best characters? If I let him cut the head off of a fish and play with the bloody insides will he need psychiatric help later? The experiences we let them have are the independent variables and how those experiences affect their life I guess is the dependent variable. Is that right all my science friends? I cheated to pass statistics so I may need assistance with that one.
My question or concern is this: Which is worse, letting your child watch violence or sex? God made us to have sex and procreate to populate the world. God did not want us to kill each other or hurt each other. "Above all love one another", or something like that. Why is it that when we were watching Black Hawk Down I didn't hesitate to let the boys see the violence, blood, gore, sadness that goes with war. However, when we were watching The Jerk (one of the best movies EVER) and Steve Martin finds his 'special purpose' it became uncomfortable. He then had sex with the biker chick and it was REALLY uncomfortable and awkward. But why? Sex is normal and among consenting adults a good thing, it's our 'special purpose'. Obviously I don't let my kids watch porn. Which do you think is worse for kids to see? Sex or Violence?

  1. well early on, i convinced myself that if i let them watch sex and violence and hear plenty of swear words, they would be desensitized to it, and it wouldn't be that big of a deal later on. so, now i have one son that likes telling ghost stories with the word butthole a lot, but hides his eyes during any kind of romantic instance. my second son prances around the house wearing a pink tutu & a feather boa while yielding a knife and threatening death to all that cross him. the third son is 3 and still hasn't cut the cord, but is fully literate in using the word "freakin" whatever.

  2. In the movie 'War of the Roses' Kathleen Turners character lets her kids eat whatever they want to desensitize them so they dont see food as taboo and never have food issues. They are fat for a while but then grow to be normal sized adults. I hope it works out for us like it did them...regarding love/sex not food : )HAHAAHA!

  3. ehhh they are all going to be screwed anyway. If you don't let them watch it they will just go to a friends house and one of their freak job of a parents will let them watch it. Seriously..my young kids watch movies from the 80s back when movies were actually good and NOGGIN. McKenna is 7 and still watching preschool on tv. And I am sure that my 16 yr old watches that japanese manga (porn) crap, I suck. but at least they knows who madonna and The "real" Karate Kid are. PRIORITIES....
